JAPANESE ACUPUNCTURE LONDON

PRACTITIONER | BIOGRAPHY

Marian Fixler

LLB (Hons) Dip Ac. Clin Ac (China)

Member of the British Acupuncture Council

My interest in East Asian medicine began when I was living in Japan and studying shiatsu. Since early adulthood, I have always had an interest in East Asian culture - meditation, Qi gong & Tai Qi and a general attraction to Japanese aesthetics - Zen gardens & pottery. Travelling in Asia and ending up living in Japan and studying Shiatsu was a sliding door moment for me - having graduated with a Law degree.

After returning to the UK, I qualified in acupuncture in 1991. This was followed by further intensive clinical training in a teaching hospital in Nanjing, China. Seven years after qualifying, I discovered Japanese acupuncture and felt like I had come round full circe to where my passion began in Japan. I trained in the UK, the Netherlands and Japan. I taught for many years as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster and as a guest lecturer at other acupuncture colleges in the UK. I am passionate about making Japanese acupuncture more widely available to practitioners and patients and organise and teach post-graduation courses in the UK and abroad.

My clinical experience includes:

  • Working for many years in a busy GP practice on the NHS
  • Working as part of an integrated team of health care workers (both allopathic & complementary) in one of Europe's largest flagship centres for HIV/AIDS in the 1990s before the advent of anti-retrovirals.
  • Drug & alcohol projects
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary clinic & my own private practice
  • I have extensive experience of supporting couples who are trying to conceive and offer pregnancy support with particular emphasis on lifestyle and nutritional advice. I am a member of the Acupuncture Childbirth Team (ACT) and served on the Steering Committee for many years.
  • I work with young babies & children, using a non-invasive style of Japanese acupuncture, called Shonishin.
  • As an experienced and Advanced EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) practitioner - I am well placed to offer support to people with issues around stress, anxiety & depression.

I have published numerous articles on Japanese acupuncture and have undertaken research that has been published in professional journals. I have presented papers at the British Acupuncture Council’s Research Symposiums & at the British Acupuncture Council conferences.

Soon after qualifying, I served on the Register of Traditional Chinese Medicine (RTCM), one of the registering bodies that became part of the British Acupuncture Council when it was formed in 1995. For many years, I served on the Board  of the Toyohari Association UK-  first as the Academic Dean and later as President.
