I am sharing a link to a blog post from one of my British Acupuncture council colleagues – Colette Assor – written in response to reports in the media about ‘add-on’ treatments during IVF and questioning the research. You will see from the information below, that acupuncture is advocated by Professor Tim Child – a leading specialist in the IVF field.
In this post, Colette Assor explores what it means to have an integrated approach to IVF. As acupuncturists, we support our clients who are going through IVF, focussing our treatments to support the different stages of the IVF cycle and in some cases, managing the side effects of the drugs. Acupuncture is of course very helpful for managing the stresses that can arise for couples having to go down this route. Whatever else it does, acupuncture calms the nervous system and patients can go into deep levels of relaxation.
An integrated approach to IVF
I am also sharing a link to a post from the British Acupuncture Council (my registering professional body), in which research specialist Ian Appleyard, highlights that the critical report by the HFEA (Human Fertility & Embryology Authority) about ‘add-ons’ with fertility treatment, doesn’t actually mention acupuncture with regard to any negative implications of it’s use.
As Ian points out “Recent systematic reviews indicate that acupuncture may well be beneficial for those undergoing IVF.”
